Entry Skills: At this level students can understand conversations and instructions and communicate independently in various situations including certain special professional and academic environments. The expectation of the level is to approach the language skills of a near native speaker.
Upon successful completion of the courses of this level, students will be able to recognize academic vocabulary and collocations in a variety of contexts, use the techniques of skimming, scanning, and eliminating incorrect answers in reading academic material; make predictions about the content based on the headlines / charts / pictures /text; Identify and formulate main idea and supporting details; Determine locations of the main idea; Use mapping or outline in structuring oral expression or essays; stay on topic throughout, Format an essay; Identify and utilize words of transition and illustration; Identify and utilize patterns that organize and structure oral/written expression such as: list of order, time order, definition and example, comparison / contrast, cause and effect; Recognize and make inferences in oral and written expression; tell the difference between metaphor and simile; exercise critical thinking, assess information, compare alternative points of view, develop a sound argument; identify potential problems and solutions. The majority of sentences are error-free with only very occasional errors. Students will also approach near native-like pronunciation with good intonation and rhythm.
